The
Island of St. Maarten
/ St. Martin
Arriving
in St. Maarten you’ll
be greeted by calm blue
seas, white sandy shores
and a sky full of sunshine,
but this intriguing little
island also has a unique
French and Dutch divide
which sets it apart. Behind
the palms and beach chairs
you will still find a
few pockets of real French
West Indian life in the
bistros and boulangeries
of Marigot. Alternatively,
easy going Philipsburg
on the Dutch side offers
a plethora of shops and
streets to explore.
St.Martin
& St.Maarten Activities
Gorgeous
beaches and fabulous
resorts, boats, bikinis
und movie-set beauty,
are Caribbean vacation
essentials. But there
is a lot more to enjoy,
see and do. Here are
a few things you might
like to try on your
next trip to St. Martin.
Recommendations for
land lovers include
a visit to the gourmet
capital of the island
- Grand Case, a luck
of the draw at one of
the Casinos, a night
out at one of the many
nightclubs or bars with
live music, or a visit
to one of the local
fine arts gallery for
a sampling of Caribbean
Art.
Recent years have seen
the growth of many sports
on the island aimed
at both fitness and
fun. Golf, tennis, beach
volleyball, mountain
biking and even horseback
riding is just a few
of the adventure activities
awaiting you in St.Martin.
The island offers an
extensive range of water
sports activities, including
snorkeling, sailing,
jet-skiing, water-skiing,
kayaking, wind surfing,
parasailing and deep-sea
fishing. For the avid
Scuba diver, an excursion
to islands such as St.
Barthélemy, Saba, and
Anguilla is a must.
St.Martin
/ St.Maarten Tour A
scenic "loop" around the
island ...
can
take just half a day,
including plenty of
stops. If you head up
the east shoreline from
Philipsburg, follow
the signs to Dawn Beach
and Oyster Pond. The
road winds past soaring
hills, turquoise waters,
quaint West Indian houses,
and wonderful views
of St. Barths. As you
cross over to the French
side, the road leads
to Grand Case, Marigot,
and Sandy Ground.
From Marigot, the flat
island of Anguilla is
visible. Completing
the loop brings you
past Cupecoy Beach,
through Maho and Simpson
Bay, where Saba looms
in the horizon, and
back over the mountain
road into Philipsburg."
Find the perfect vacation
getaway at St. Martin.
You can opt for one
of the all-inclusive
hotels, charming small
inns or simple guesthouses.
Or you can stay in style
in one of the many luxury
resorts, villas and
suites. Whatever you
are looking for you
will find it. St Martin
has an abundance of
vacation accommodation
choices to suit individual
tastes and budgets here
is a list of most of
them:
GETTING
AROUND IN ST.MARTIN
Rental
cars are the primary
mode of transportation
for visitors staying
on island. If any driving
is expected off the
major roads (such as
to some of the more
secluded beaches), a
4-wheel drive is recommended.
Traffic on the island
however has become a
major problem, long
traffic jams between
Marigot, Philipsburg
and the airport are
common.
Parking can be a real
challenge during the
business day and even
at night during the
high season.
Buses connect the towns
but don’t serve the
island’s beaches.
They run from about
6:00 in the morning
to midnight and can
be boarded at bus stops
in towns or flagged
down anywhere along
the roads.
Taxis are ready and
waiting at Princess
Juliana Airport
and L'Espérance
Airport as well
as at all major hotels.
The cabs have no meters,
but drivers must follow
official rates for travel
throughout the island.
After 10 p.m., rates
rise 25 percent, and
after midnight, 50 percent.
A 2½-hour taxi tour
of the island costs
$50 for one or two people,
$18 for each additional
person.
The tourist office can
arrange it for you.
Also, hotel tour desks
can arrange sightseeing
tours by taxi, the only
way to go for those
not wanting to drive
a rental car.
One
of the great attractions
of the island is the
duty-free shopping available
on both sides of the
island. You will find
elegant boutiques with
all the brand names
at prices much lower
than back home, elegant
jewelry, tablecloths,
crystal, Dutch Delft
Blue, liquors, top-of-the-line
electronics and in addition,
wonderful island souvenirs.
Most of the shops in
Marigot are open Monday
through Saturday from
10:00 AM-1:00 PM and
re-open from 3:00 PM-7:00
PM. Sundays almost all
shops are closed.
Whether
you choose a Swedish
massage a deep cleansing
facial, or a hot stone
massage with a spa manicure,
the choice is yours.
Find here a selection
of St.Martin's beauty
salons, health clubs
& spas, hair dressers,
nail studios, weight-loss
centers and yoga studios:
Sail
on one of the big catamarans,
or power on over, to
the surrounding islands.
Swaliga sails daily
to St. Barths. Voyager
and The Edge go daily
either to Saba or St.
Barths. Cruise to a
deserted island on a
picnic sail and snorkel
among the coral reefs
aboard Lambada, Blue
Beard, Random Wind or
Scoobidoo.
Many charter companies
offer day trips from
Philipsburg to Saba
and St. Eustatius (the
other two islands that
make up the Dutch Windwards
group), Anguilla and
St. Barth's.
Like the Nightlife ?
If you are looking for
a fun night out ...
try
one of the island's
many casinos located
on the Dutch side of
the island. All the
major styles of play
are represented at St.
Martin Casinos, from
Black Jack to Baccarat
and back. These European-style
casinos are more sophisticated
and quieter than their
glitzy Las Vegas counterparts.
No matter what your
game, you'll find a
number of casinos offering
plenty of opportunities
to dance with Lady Luck.
Most hotels provide
round-trip transportation
to the casinos.
are world famous for
their beautiful white
sand and turquoise
water. Each beach
is unique, and all
beaches are open to
the public. Coral
reefs populated by
colorful marine life
fringe the coast,
and several tiny islets
with lovely beaches
are just a short distance
away.
St. Martin is only
a quick flight away
from the islands of
Saba, St. Eustatius,
St. Barths, and Anguilla;
enabling visitors
to sample a wide variety
of beaches and surroundings.
