The new fish market mirrors Fish Alley, which has long since disappeared from Philipsburg, according to Ruan. Fish Alley was the ideal place of buy fresh fish or a meal from the catch of the day, and a place to socialise.
The new market also has these elements, with a bar on the lagoon front and benches throughout the complex for visitors to rest. Fishermen in Simpson Bay have sparkling new stalls to sell their catch when the new fish market is finally opened.
The market complex is designed to offer a comfortable place for the fishermen to display their catch as well as vegetable and provision sellers to peddle their wares.
The new market, located next to Simpson Bay Bridge, also has office spaces and restaurants that will sell local delicacies. There will be 15-20 stalls for the fish and other vendor groups, together with a bar facing Simpson Bay Lagoon.
